SATURDAY MARCH 28- SUNDAY MARCH 29TH
The exhibition is open and free between 10.30- 4PM
A calm sound and sculpture installation comes to the Regency Townhouse.
Brighton artists Claire Knill and Julian Deane will transform the Regency Townhouse into a temporary retreat from city life this March with their collaborative installation A Place to Breathe Slowly. Running over the weekend of 28–29 March, the free exhibition brings together Knill’s large-scale suspended sculpture and Deane’s immersive sound environment to create a space designed for quiet attention and slow experience.
Rather than a traditional exhibition or performance, the work invites visitors to spend time in the space at their own pace — sitting, lying down, reading, drawing or simply resting as sound and movement unfold around them. Knill’s colourful geometric mobile moves gently with the air in the room, while Deane’s slow-evolving soundscape creates an atmospheric environment intended to support a calmer state of attention.
The installation reflects a growing interest in environmental and ambient art practices that prioritise atmosphere, duration and shared experience over spectacle. Alongside the installation, the weekend will include a morning sound environment, a large-scale projection performance of Deane’s film The Plough shown through the suspended sculpture, and a guided Regency Sound Walk exploring deep listening in the surrounding streets.
A Place to Breathe Slowly takes place at the Regency Town House, 1st Floor 13 Brunswick Square, Hove BN3 1 EH
Please note the exhibition is accessed via stairs.

PARTICIPATORY SESSIONS DURING THE EXHIBITION

Saturday 5PM - 6PM
A special live presentation of The Plough, a Sussex landscape film and soundtrack by artist Julian Deane / Woodchester Piano Company.
This large-scale projection and live sound performance will be shown through Claire Knill’s suspended Willow Tree installation, creating a layered environment of image, movement and slow-evolving sound. Rather than a traditional screening or concert, The Plough is designed as a shared atmosphere — a quiet, immersive experience where film, sound and space unfold together. Tickets £14 or your discretionary donation.

Sunday 29th 10AM - 11 AM
A Regency Sound Walk
Beginning at the Regency Townhouse, this gentle walk invites participants to slow down and notice the everyday soundscape — footsteps, voices, wind, traffic and space — with fresh attention.
Led by local historian and tour guide Stacy Deane and sound artist Julian Deane. The walk explores the relationship between place, history and sensation. Tickets £14 or your discretionary donation.

Sunday 29th between 4-5 PM
FULLY BOOKED
A Circle With Breath and Compassion
We are not so different from trees.
Like the willow we yield, bend and find our ground through movement.
Held within Claire's sculpture and Julian's sound, we gather simply to notice, breathe and connect.
To become curious about what is happening inside us, right now, in this body, in this room.
We will explore what it means to be human in the presence of a tree. Its deep roots. Its capacity to shelter. The way it exists, without effort.
And we will sit together. Because something shifts when we bring compassionate awareness to ourselves in the presence of others.
You don't need to do anything here except arrive. A donation to Ochre House discretionary.
